Personal Reflection on Learning

Writer's picture: Mandie FowlerMandie Fowler

Over the past month, I have spent a lot of time eating while walking (or not having time to eat), neglecting my personal life, and not sleeping. I feel like I am both running a marathon and an all-out-sprint, all at once. All in preparation for the return on our teachers. I want everything to be right, I want our teachers to have what they need, be it technology, curriculum, supplies, or just plain human support. This is doubly true for our novice teachers, those first and second-year teachers who are barely treading water and wondering why they didn’t just go to work in an accounting firm somewhere.

One thing that has helped me to get organized and look at things through a different lens has been the course Technology Driven Curriculum and Social Media. I have looked at ways to better incorporate technology into our beginning teacher and mentor programs in order to accommodate everyone’s crazy busy schedules.

This week we have been in preplanning, and I have tried to make personal contact with every single teacher, we have 3 of our 6 preplanning days left, and I have managed to see about half, so hopefully, I’ll be able to stop by and see the rest in the next few days. However, if I don’t, this course has reminded me of other ways I can ‘communicate’ with them personally without physically being there.

This course also has forced me to reflect on my philosophies about specific areas of learning. How much do I value collaboration? What steps am I willing to take to make that a sacred time for our teachers? How can I better utilize technology to facilitate our teacher cross-district PLCs and beyond? What tools do we already have access to and which do we need to pursue?
