Digital Storyboarding

This past week I have had the joy of observing several of our beginning teachers in their classrooms and had the opportunity to discuss their concerns and requests for follow-up trainings as the year progresses. One of the technologies our district K-5 classrooms implements every year is the print/digital storyboard product StudenTreasures. I was able to share my own student publications from years past as well as the book my (now grown) son published years ago.

What kind of BYOD resources are available to your population?

This is a non-issue for my district.

How could you make more devices accessible?

This year our district utilizes ESSER III/ARP funds to refresh all staff laptops. They were then able to take their older model laptops home for at-home use (all 3 years old or less).

How could you have students use smart phones to create, share, and/or gather data for this assessment?

Because my students are all adult learners, they are able to use their personal devices as they see fit.

How useful is digital storytelling as an assessment strategy in a variety of contexts?

Digital storytelling is a great way for students to share what they know about any topic. Over the years, my students have produced books about topics ranging from mythology to the body systems as well as have published fictional stories and anthologies of poetry.

As we finish the first full week of school, I look forward to watching these novice teachers grow into the leaders I know they are capable of becoming. I hope they enjoy publishing their student work as much as I did over the years.
