{Just} one piece of advice...

Communication is key. Communicate with parents often and be positive in your interactions (Bilton, et. al, 2017). Frontload your relationship with them, don’t assume that they’re reading your ParentSquare messages or checking their child’s grades in FOCUS.

Call them.

At first, try and call everyone within the first two weeks of school or earlier. Explain their child’s data, don’t assume that they understand it, but don’t talk down to them either. Relationship building is key to any successful classroom, not just student-teacher, but also teacher-family (Brewer, 2021). You earn up to 4 hours of comp time per quarter for things like meeting parents after hours, just be sure to get pre-approval and talk to your principal/school secretary about documentation.
