Choose your Assessments wisely

As you plan your classroom assessments, you will need to choose the format, depending on what you are assessing. Three common types of assessments are open-ended, select-response and performance.

Open-ended assessments allow for multiple ‘right’ answers, and often encourage students to think more deeply without fear of being wrong. Andre Copeland (2017) gives a nice outline of pros and cons for both open and closed question formats in his article Microsoft Word - The Pros and Cons of Open and Closed Questions.docx (interpnet.com)

Selected-response (multiple-choice) tests offer students a specific question then typically 2-4 answer choices. Check out the pros and cons for this type of assessment at Selected Response | Assessment in Action (wordpress.com)

Performance-based assessments are by far my favorite type of assessment, but they are also the most time-consuming. Watch the Prezi video by Lauren Lyles for more about why this assessment type may be worth the extra effort. https://prezi.com/dvqua8wih-n4/performance-assessment-advantages-disadvantages/
